Degrees in HVAC

HVAC

Most heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) employers seek out candidates with some formal HVAC education or apprenticeship training, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The majority of HVAC programs offer diplomas or associate degrees, though bachelor degree programs are also available.

New England Institute of Technology – Palm Beach, for example, offers an 18-month diploma program and a 24-month associate of applied science degree program in HVAC technology. Many community colleges and vocational/technical schools offer short-term programs in HVAC.

For students interested in earning a bachelor degree, one option is Ferris State University, which offers a bachelor of science in HVAC engineering technology at its campuses throughout Michigan. Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, also offers a bachelor of science in HVAC technology.

Many HVAC technicians receive their training through an apprenticeship. Many programs are offered through chapters of organizations such as the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, and the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association. One such program is offered by the National Capital Chapter of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, which has an apprentice program for HVAC students in Maryland.

HVAC students should be sure to seek out programs that lead to the necessary certifications required to practice in the field. Those who work on refrigerators, for example, must be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Certifications are available in small appliances, high-pressure refrigerants, and low-pressure refrigerants.
